Education
Zamzam’s education program is unique in that it provides not only academic education but a social and economic haven for children whose lives have been impacted severely by the recurrence of conflict and climatic disasters.
The challenges of the education system include lack of access and widespread inequity, low quality education due to poor infrastructure and weak capacity (e.g., untrained teachers, multiple curricula) for service delivery.
Many Somali children who survived the civil war and climate-disasters live with severe long-term effects on their development, arising from psychological trauma and lack of proper nutrients at critical stages of their lives.
Many others have been uprooted from their homes and deprived of their parents.
Hundreds of thousands of children have been left alone to fend for themselves, mired in poverty and exposed to all kinds of risks and dangers.
Zamzam is a pioneer in the construction of quality school infrastructure, and has established over 120 schools (elementary, secondary), 20 of which it runs directly, with a student population of over 15,000.
Modern, scientific laboratories and practical lessons are provided in the arts and sciences to contribute to an enhanced learning environment.
Teachers receive regular training and teaching material.
Zamzam Foundation has a university whose main campus is in Mogadishu with branches in Baidoa and Jowhar. Zamzam University has a strong science and research component and an agricultural experimental farm in the main campus, where innovative farming techniques, such as hydroponic farming, are constantly being developed to respond to negative effects of climate change on food security.
Hundreds of youth graduated from Zamzam TVET programs responding to high unemployment of youth, estimated at over 70% of the population
Donating to education can open doors of opportunity and achievement for many individuals.
