Food security is essential to ensuring the health and stability of societies

Food Security, Sustainable Livelihoods & Economic Development

Somali community is dependent on agriculture, livestock, and income from remittances.
Recurrent climatic and man-made shocks result dire lack in food security in many rural areas.
This has resulted in low food production, escalating food prices, and dropping livestock prices resulting in rural unemployment.
Direct and indirect consequences for households include losing their livelihoods and being displaced.
Zamzam believes that poverty can be ended through long-term commitment to sustainable food security and socio-economic growth programs.
One of Zamzam’s important focus areas is agriculture. We provide farmers with tools and supplies (e.g., seeds, farm tools and heavy equipment), support for land preparation and canalization, and through our Zamzam University, training on innovative farming techniques such as hydroponic farming, which Zamzam pioneered in the whole of Somalia.
Zamzam has constructed and rehabilitation 26 canals and irrigation systems to support farmers in Lower and Middle Shabelle and Hiraan regions of Somalia.

To address the unemployment crisis in Somalia, Zamzam initiated employment creation and business development programs which especially focus on supporting youth and women.
Zamzam’s Somali Entrepreneurship Incubator (SEI) offers incubation of SMEs, train-the- trainer programs, entrepreneurship skill development,
networking, and public awareness campaigns through business exhibitions. The centre aims to revive and promote a thriving entrepreneurship culture in Somalia as a whole.
The Sustainable Jobs Creation for Somali Youth program the last three years have been in creating and supporting sustainable jobs for Somali youth, with focus on gender equity and increasing support for young female entrepreneurs.
Youth and women are equipped with skills through technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in partnership with various international INGOs (International NGO) such as Spark.
To support youth, women-led households and marginalized populations living in poverty, Zamzam Foundation also runs income generation programs such as microfinancing and training on business development for new or existing small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs).
As a result, Zamzam Foundation has been able to support thousands of families with livelihood interventions and income generating initiatives.

Investing in food security enhances the stability of countries and reduces poverty and hunger.
