Peacebuilding & Governance
Zamzam’s strength in this sector comes from our organization’s demonstrated record of accomplishment in inter-linking humanitarian, development, and peace efforts (‘triple nexus’) for the last thirty years, as a better and proven response to protracted crises.
This approach is combined with finding commonalities between warring parties and conducting structured dialogues that are inclusive and egalitarian.
Several uniquely designed, peace-building projects that utilize post-conflict social transformation techniques and enhanced economic development initiatives and educational programs have been implemented in this way. Nonviolent approaches are used to resolve key causes of conflicts, whose cause is often limited access to, and competition to control, natural resources such as water, grazing rights, farming land. Zamzam, with partners such as the life & peace institute and Somali Stability Fund, promotes and strengthens social integration, inclusion, and trust between neighbouring communities. For example, in Mataban District, we successfully carried out several inter-clan dialogues and peace initiatives through peace platforms that led to a signed peace agreement.
Warring community members reconciled, and revived lost trust and confidence. Incidences of conflict decreased, and goods and people began to freely move again between the clan boundaries in the district.
Mutual respect and tolerance are keys to building peace and understanding in multicultural societies
