Supporting families to overcome poverty, food insecurity and climate-change induced crises

Somali society is mainly dependent on revenues from agriculture, livestock, and remittances. In the last few years, frequent and severe droughts and flooding compounded by conflict and constant displacement have led to a significant decrease in food production, higher food prices, and huge drop in livestock prices. This has affected rural income and caused widespread unemployment and loss of revenue.

Since the beginning of January, Zamzam Foundation has implemented several social support and development projects in Banadir, Bay and Hiran aimed at mitigating life-threatening effects of climate change and poverty that threaten food insecurity in the region.

To help rebuild livelihoods after devastating droughts and flash flooding, Zamzam provided 74 impoverished households (+400 people) with income generating support. This included opening small retail stores for them, distributing sewing machines to start tailoring businesses and providing farmers with dairy cows, irrigation pumps, and training on drought-resistant subsistence farming. Reduction of poverty and increased human resilience to the effects of climate and human-induced crises require a strong commitment to policies that promote social and economic development and strengthen human capacity. These projects are aimed to boost local knowledge and capacity to produce basic food supplies and thus the ability of rural households to meet their needs for the whole year through sustainable income generation.

The families that benefited from the development projects expressed their appreciation and thanked all the contributing partner organizations like Qatar Charity, Alsafa Humanity, and Al Imdad.

Zamzam Foundation cannot thank supporters enough for their contributions, without which many Somalis would continue to suffer greatly. Thank you.
