Zamzam Foundation establishes Special Consultative Status with the United Nations

Zamzam Foundation establishes Special Consultative Status with the United Nations

On June 22nd, Zamzam Foundation was granted Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the main bodies of the United Nations.

ECOSOC
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the General Assembly and the Security Council are the three main charter bodies of the United Nations. The idea behind the establishment of the Economic and Social Council was that while the Security Council would promote “collective security and enforce peace in the world,” ECOSOC would “promote peace through international economic cooperation.”

What it means for Zamzam to have Special Consultative Status
Establishing special consultative status with ECOSOC will enable Zamzam to attend high level UN meetings and events, interact with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, and have access to UN and other international programs. We welcome this new gateway to fulfill our mission to serve the most vulnerable and marginalized at home while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at a global level. Somalia is one of the countries where most of the SDGs are densely concentrated and Zamzam’s work is aligned with key SDGs such as poverty reduction, health and well-being, education, gender equality, water and sanitation, decent work and economic growth, climate action, and peacebuilding.

With its new status, Zamzam’s partnership coordinator will be attending the 2023 SDG Summit convening during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level week, an event organized to reaffirm our “collective commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“Recognition of Zamzam by the UN is an important landmark for us as it affirms the importance of our work and encourages us to continue to provide much needed service to our people who are suffering. We are grateful to the NGO Branch that recommended us for approval, and immensely indebted to our friends, partners and supporters, without whom this would not have been possible. We look forward to continuing the important journey of serving the vulnerable and lifting people out of poverty together.”
