The gift of sight: cataract eye operations in Banadir and Middle Shabelle

The gift of sight: cataract eye operations in Banadir and Middle Shabelle

The health condition of many Somalis has been affected by the effects of prolonged conflict and climate-induced disasters. Visual impairment and blindness are among the many preventable diseases affecting the majority of men, women and children in society, especially those who cannot afford medical treatment.

Zamzam Foundation, in cooperation with its charitable partners, performs hundreds of cataract surgeries for poor Somali individuals every year. Cataracts are a common eye condition which, if left untreated, can lead to a gradual clouding of the eye’s natural lens. This condition significantly impacts vision, making daily activities quite challenging, and often leads to total loss of vision.  The operation does not take long to perform but significantly transforms the lives of those who receive it and their communities. This year, 450 people living in Banadir and Middle Shabelle regions benefited from this service. Free eye screening sessions were also conducted for 100 students.

Zamzam Foundation expresses gratitude on behalf of Somali people to all contributing organizations. Thank you for always being ready with support to alleviate the suffering of our people who have been impacted by prolonged conflicts and environmental challenges. Thank you.
